Feral Days

Well....nothing has changed since Wednesday.

This week has been FERAL!

On top of all the other stuff my order delivery this week was 24 hours late.....this causes havoc within the ranks - my people have customers waiting for their goods - sometimes 25 customers or more that need to be phoned or receive their delivery late (most HAVE to deliver theirs on a Thursday - which is pension/payday - or the customers won't have the money).
This puts a lot of pressure on all of us.
Message after message, call after call seeing if the order had arrived yet......so many, many text messages later.....
They were great about it though I must say.
Big A helped me pack and we had it ready by 3.45pm yesterday - and it was HOT right at that time of course.....
It had all been collected by 4.30pm!

We received an email yesterday to let us know one of our ladies in Victoria lost everything in the bushfires.
There were instructions for us to make a donation if we wanted to.
I thought we could do a bit better than that.
So I have received permission to host a morning/afternoon tea to raise money.
I'm planning on charging a $5 donation per person to attend (all donations will be given directly to our lady) - I have some great prizes organised which will be given away on the day (a ticket system, get a ticket for turning up, a ticket for bringing a plate, a ticket for making another donation etc).
I have told my managers I am happy to put on morning/afternoon tea if they will extend invitations to their teams.
Every little bit helps.

Last night the four of us went out for tea.
Just us!
All of us....together.
A rare thing!
We had a nice counter meal, a good laugh - it was great after a stressful day.

I have done nothing as far as tests or meds (besides picking up the prescriptions from the chemist).
I hope to get there today for the blood tests and the rest I'm thinking about for now.....I dunno....it may sound silly, but honestly the possible side effects seem to conflict - A LOT!
He did mention that (the Professor) and was unsure about giving them to me in the first place. He then decided I could try them....and stop them if they weren't any good.
One of them says definitely DO NOT stop taking suddenly.....this is what I mean...

Second Thoughts

Having a few niggling thoughts tonight.

I wonder about the wisdom of taking medication for an arrhythmia when I haven't had an ecg for years.....

I wonder about the wisdom of taking two new medications at once - both of which have tiredness as a side effect (along with other things).

I can't be any more tired than I am now - I'm seriously barely getting through the day.

I am wondering if it was such a good idea to put off the colonoscopy/gastroscopy for another month (at least).
This medication isn't really for the problem - the arrhythmia I have put up with for years and years - the medication for the pain - well that's just a band aid isn't it.

Anyway, will think it through overnight - need to have my blood tests done before I start taking these.....

I dunno.

Very Thankful

So very thankful that we weathered yesterdays storm.

There could be further job cuts if the price of aluminium doesn't improve....

...so another bridge to cross at some point.

This gave us an excellent point of discussion with Z17 - and to see his father almost in tears telling the story of what happened yesterday may have made it all sink in.

He said to Z17 "This is real mate, this is the real world and you're just about to step into it - if you don't do your best, if you muck around you'd be first to go in this situation".

True.

************************************************************************************

My appointment went well.

We went through everything.

My resting heart rate was 108 beats per minute - Prof R almost fell of his chair when I said I had an arrhythmia and have never been given anything for it.....especially when I told him what the cardiologist said to me - basically 'You're a stressed out mother - go home you'll be right'

He has given me something for it (beta blockers) - and something else for the pain I'm having at the moment.

Double the advantages as in a higher dose it is an antidepressant - in the lower dose he has given me it helps with pain - can't hurt either way.
I'm not depressed at the moment, but if I have to go on like this for much longer I could be if I'm not careful.
He actually asked me straight out if I felt depressed - instead of TELLING me I am - which I'm not at the moment - and he accepted my answer and didn't give me THAT LOOK.

I need to take these for a month, have further blood tests first (he is really thinking thyroid despite previous test results) I have redness in the corners of my palms which is apparently a sign of thyroid issues - along with the fact that I can't lose any weight, fatigue etc etc.

He was surprised at the amount of bone pain I have also.
He is also testing me for Ross River Fever - and checking my Lymphocytes again.

In his words 'I want to make sure we haven't missed anything' - what a relief.

I explained to him briefly why I put off going to the doctor these days - he was very kind about it and didn't make me feel stupid.

Then onto the stomach issues - he wants me to have a gastroscopy and a colonoscopy (oh, what fun) to be arranged at my next appointment in a month - he asked me what I would like to do, have these first or try the meds first....I went with try the meds first.
He said if I feel any worse or anything else happens to please come back and see him straight away.

So some more to do - but at least I'm getting somewhere.

*********************************************************************************

Z17 survived his first ever filling quite well.

He has had some bleaching trays made up for his teeth too.
We have a very nice younger Scottish dentist.
I won't let the boys see an old dentist (no offence to any old dentists who may be reading this!) - very bad experiences for me with old white haired school dental caravan dentists in the 70's - horrible.

We pay a fortune in private health insurance so I'm using it!!!

He does need the bleach - a lot of antibiotics when he was younger have stained his teeth a little - not much just a little but a nice *whiter* smile does heaps for the confidence I think.

We have another appointment to pick it all up next week - so another 'thing' sorted out and off my list.

Big A is home today - so a quiet day for him I think.
It's a difficult situation and would be for anyone - pleased/relieved he has his job - but so very sorry for those that don't, and their families.

We're o.k.

Sorry, I haven't had a chance to get on here.
We both arrived home at the same time (8.30pm) - Big A from work - me from my appointment.

He still has his job.

The reports of 30 being sacked is an understatement - more like 50.

He is pretty devastated and drained tonight, close to tears as he told us the events of the day - some of his mates have gone.

It was the way it was done.

No-one had a clue who would be next....at all.

My brother works there too - and he is o.k. - for now.

My SF works there as a contractor - he's now finished working there (told today).

Thank you so much everyone for your positive vibes and kind messages,

I will blog about the specialist tomorrow,

G

5% Chance.....The dice is rolling....

Big A called me.

His workplace is laying off 30 people TODAY.

No warning.

I have calculated this to be 5% of the employees there.

He said the environment is horrible, people are crying....especially their manager, who has the job of 'coming to get' people....

Basically they are called in, talked to, laid off, then escorted from the grounds.....they don't get to see them again.

He said if I don't see him before 7pm tonight I'll know he's o.k.

My brother and SF work there too......

Any positive vibes would be good right now.....

Ah Me Nerves......

Off to the Professor tonight....7.15pm - still seems a weird time but anyway.

I would love for my body to be able to keep up with my mind.

I'd be happy if I felt even 20% better than what I have been.

So we'll see what he has to say......

** ** ** ** ** **

I have been keeping an eye on Z17.

He has been quite run down in the last 3 - 4 weeks.
I have never seen anyone sleep quite as much.

He even changed his mood to 'drained' on his myspace......

I have also noticed he's losing a lot of hair - add to that the fact that he has at least 10 grey hairs already.....what does this mean he's going to be grey and half bald by the time he's 20?
Not if I can help it.
Also his skin hasn't been the best, and since he hasn't been working I know it's not from the heat/grease in the kitchen at HJ's.....

I have done some research and it seems a Zinc deficiency fits with all of these things.
So I'm giving him the maximum recommended dose, along with some iron and see if there is any change...if not back to the GP.......

Not even a week back at school and I've had a phone call ALREADY from his teacher.

Nothing TOO bad at this stage but I will need to keep him on track - if possible.

What is going on with the boy???

Why pick college to be disruptive and silly?

We'll be having a big discussion about this after school today.....on the way to his dentists appointment.
Like Small Man this is his first EVER filling......just a little one......ironically the same tooth as SM...I have a feeling he won't be as calm and relaxed as SM was........

His teacher seems to feel he is being 'led' by one of the boys that was in his class last year (remember last year with him at school - bloody hell!!!!!).
Small Man agrees with this and says this 'James' kid is a terrible influence on Z17.

I said to the teacher that's fine but Z17 needs to take responsibility for his own crap and not allow himself to be led.
I will be asking Z17 where he thinks this boy 'James' will be when Z17 fails/is asked to leave his course/can't get a job?

I told the teacher to seperate them.
And gave him permission to confiscate Z17's iphone during class time if necessary - he chuckled and said he'd leave that to me to tell Z17 - oh I will don't you worry!

I will also be telling him I'm not prepared to go through ANOTHER year of this (phone calls/letters) - and to make a choice - go to college, do the work, behave - or get a full time job.
He is almost an adult after all.

Rant over.

My interview went really well yesterday - I don't know what you were worried about - ha ha!
It was like riding a bike or something.
So one new starter for me, and one less issue to deal with for work.
Only 99 other issues to try and sort out now.....

Journal - This Week was....

Difficult to find the right words for a post this week.

The tragic bushfires in Victoria last weekend have bought our nation to it's knees in shock, grief and disbelief.

And it won't be over for a very long time.

My thoughts are with everyone affected - and pondering today what happens when the media disappear, and the rest of the country 'gets on with it'.

******************************************************

My week has been a typical one.

Z17 has taken his annual leave and won't be available to start back at work until next Friday - phew...the break has been nice.

Monday : Big A and PB went to Hobart for the Hobart Cup (horse racing) - so a quiet day. Unfortunately my stomach was about the worst it's ever been - so very little accomplished besides the usual order placing/stats etc

Tuesday : Many, many loads of washing done - my front loader is brilliant but far out it takes ages to do a load - and I can't fit too much in it......not always great when you have heaps.
Z17 organised for college.
No books to buy, or pens etc - he bought home virtually all of the stuff I bought last year unused!!!
His subjects still hadn't been finalised for this year yet either.

Wednesday : Back to school - Z17 has settled back in - I drove the first morning, he has driven in to the city the other two days - and did very well!
He did some initial working out of his subjects - all but one.
Small Man has a lovely new teacher - he called me Wednesday to introduce himself and discuss the year etc.
Phone still ringing with positions vacant enquiries - so another two calls down.
Forgot to bank Tuesday - oops! Fixed that up Wednesday!
Many phone calls passing on the phone interview people, working out areas, working out where we need people and how best to divide the areas...and so on.....
I even organised an interview for myself for Monday - it's been a while since I've interviewed anyone myself or had a 'new starter' - have attended many with my managers and helped them with theirs though.

Thursday: Went to college with Z17, bought his car back stopping at supermarket for supplies on the way home. Packed a picnic lunch for Small Man and I and left for an excursion to the Cataract Gorge.......
....but didn't take my camera.....
We had a nice day - he was given his book pack (WOW! a million times better than what he was getting at the high school).
We were broken into grade groups to discuss the year ahead.
The level of caring from the teachers seriously blows me away - and they are genuine!
They really want SM to attend a grade 9 camp at Cradle Mountain in 3 weeks.
Two of his teachers discussed it with us - one asked what SM's obstacles were - he said whether or not he could cope physically, and the food situation.
So, just for him, all children will be given the option to bring their own food for the three nights - just so that he's not singled out.
I was amazed.
They promised not to push him - and that he is the expert on his own body and what he can handle - and they will respect that.
And he's agreed to go.
We then had a dentist appointment at 2pm - SM's first EVER filling (and a teeny one at that).
He amazes me! He was so calm and brave - not a bit fazed.
But yet going to therapy for his food issues fills him with fear and dread....
After this we picked up Z17 from college - went home - cooked tea for Big A (while doing another phone interview) who has to eat at 5.30pm when he's day shift - cleaned up and then went to see one of my ladies for her weekly meeting.
I think I was in bed at 10pm Thursday night - ha ha!

Friday - received a 'drop in' visit from one of my ladies that's been away - the first time all week I wasn't up and showered - she didn't care :) I think they all realise now if the drop in unannounced, or on weekends - they get what they find with me.
We discussed the possibility of a promotion for her to manager - it would take some work off my plate, she would get paid more, and it would be more convenient. She is thinking about it, I think she's 90% yes at this stage.
Quickly changed my morning meeting to later in the day - at that stage I thought Z17 was finishing at 12.30pm.
All organised and ready to go - send Z17 a message to check if 12.30pm was still good - he writes back 'Actually just changed my classes so have a full day now'.
He's now doing VET Cert III in I.T. ( he received cert II last year) - Music - English Writing (pre tertiary) he scored an OA for this last year :) - Sisco Networking.

O.K. so another change in my plans - but I stuck with my time schedule for the meeting and changed everything else.
I met with RJ and MJ to discuss their promotion - which I proposed to them last week - this would have been great for them - and meant a new manager for me to replace some of what PK is currently looking after (he's leaving for sure).
They have looked into it all and can't do it.
Certain government agencies again - they'll be the end of us if they keep it up.
Basically they can't earn over a certain amount - something to do with something I dunno.
That was o.k. - I will just need a plan C.
I think I got to know them a lot better Friday too.
They confided in me a whole lot, and I understand their circumstances and why they can't take this on.
MJ has schizophrenia - under control at the moment but still an unpredictable thing. I knew there was something, and that he needed a bit 'extra' from me when I visit - even little things like encouragement on their weight loss (he has lost 12kg since Christmas), including him in conversation, wrapping up a big stack of pens for him for Christmas!
It's a running joke, he always pretends to eye off whatever pen I have and reminds me not to leave it on the table!
So in hindsight the fact that he was able to attend our Christmas party was awesome - I knew he didn't like going out much, but wow!
Next year I may even get him to eat something...one step at a time.
When I first started going he would just lie on the couch fairly disinterested, so I started to include him in the conversation, ask his opinion etc.
He even went out and helped her with deliveries a few times which he has never done!
Friday HE made me my Milo - a rare thing according to RJ.

Friday afternoon - return from college with Z17 - then wait for 'the signal' - ha ha! to take Big A to meet his buddies along the highway - they are off on the first of many fishing trips in the next few months - it's tuna season or something - anyway he'll be away every second weekend for a while.

We don't do Valentines Day - we haven't for years!
Oh but no....hang on.....I did get something very special here a few weeks ago.
I don't know if I should tell you - jealousy and all that......
Ah bugger it - I'll take my chances...................................................................................

I got..............................A NEW TOILET SEAT !!!!

OMG!!!

I shall expect some jealous emails over that - ha ha ha ha!!!!

I'm actually going for the longest post EVER.

I must be getting close?

By 5pm Friday I had a cracking migraine & a terrible stomach ache - it was a corker.
I went to bed after much codeine and a few donnatabs and slept some of it off....
In time to Coles go and get groceries at 10.30pm.
It's still hanging around today but at least my mind is relatively clear and functioning - now.
I have slept - a lot.

So that's probably it from me - try not to let the shiny new toilet seat get to you too much - ha ha ha!

MESSAGE FROM THE TALL REDHEAD - aka TONI !!

Toni asked me to let you all know she is fine,
but her laptop isn't.......it's broken.....I'm not sure if it's fixable.....

G
xx

I have just moved this post back up, in case anyone missed it :)

EXTREMELY ANGRY :(

Oh I'm furious.

It was revealed to me that 'the Almighty' was giving her opinion on Small Man to anyone that would listen.

She told someone that "There is nothing wrong with 'Small Man' - he sits up until 3am playing online games in his bedroom and eating junk food - that's his problem"

Ummm...HELLO?

How the hell would she know to start with? Was she driving past at 3am every morning and checking?

The computers are not even in the boys bedrooms.

If she wanted to slag ME off to anyone that would listen that was one thing - but to discuss my child and his health with other people is a whole other thing altogether.

And to then sit here and ask me how he is, actually her parting comment when we finally got rid of her was "Plleeeaase keep in touch and let me know how he is going, I really DO care, I mean that".

The people she discussed this with couldn't believe what she was saying, and have finally admitted it to me.

I realise there's nothing I can do about it.

But I'm very, very angry and disgusted that even she could stoop that low.

G
xx

**Added at 1.45pm***

Now that i have calmed down slightly I should explain.
The Almighty was my previous manager from work.
In the last three years she has done everything possible to bring me down, discredit me, make me look stupid, ruin my business, turn my team against me, lie, harass, bully.....

At first I thought maybe I was just paranoid, but as time passed I ended up with proof.
The predicament for me was that I am not technically an employee of the company we work for (neither is she). So we are not covered by the same harassment laws as an employee would be.
She was also very careful not to put anything in writing eg email.

I had tried to let go of my own anger and bitterness after she left - I was trying not to let it keep affecting me, because that way she wins.

This however was way, way below the belt.

Like I said attack me, say what you want about me but don't bring my children into your sick, nasty, vindictive little world.

At this point I feel her conduct needs investigating, as my story is just the tip of the iceberg.
Not sure how to make that happen.

His Face Said It All

He didn't pass his driving test.

He didn't need to tell me, his face said it all.

I have had a good look at the report, and the driving test officer spoke to me about the result.

He failed him because he didn't look left and right while driving through intersections where he had right of way (eg a green traffic light driving through a 3 lane main road).
I don't do that, do you?
Also because he didn't check his rear vision mirror when stopping at an intersection, because there 'may have been a log truck behind him' was how the test officer explained it.

Hmmmm......

I'm an advocate of for safe driving,
I believe they should be well competent,
but when the points for each section add up to 21 required, and he achieved 31 in total and didn't fail any of the major parts of the test.....

Anyway it's been a long day!

I was checking his registration certificate last night and discovered his registration had expired (stupid service Tas hadn't sent him the renewal) I couldn't pay for it online because I didn't have the renewal, and didn't realise it was due today.
So I trekked into the city at 9.00am to get that sorted.
$272 - 6 months rego for him to pay.

He then drove me to meet his driving instructor for a driving lesson ($50 for 45 minutes, I'm in the wrong job!), so I went and washed his car while I waited.

Harry the hairy huntsman decided to come scurrying out from under the bonnet while I was washing it....EEEEKKKKK!

And no, that's not my hand or THE Harry just in case you were wondering!!!!

Then a quick trip home and we headed down for the test.
We had a dose of rescue remedy each.....
I waited slightly nervously for 40 minutes while he had the test.

We then had to go into the city again to pay another $54 and book him in for another test, he has to wait 28 before he can go again (who knows why).

We then came home and mucked around for what seemed like 5 minutes and it was time to take him to work.

So an expensive and not successful day for him,
hopefully he'll have a good night at work.

I told him he just didn't want to pass cos he'd miss his old Mum driving around with him, I got a reassuring pat on the shoulder for that :)
He knows I'm slightly not looking forward to this next step of independence (not that I'd try and discourage him!!!).
Growing up with ADD I have always needed to do a lot more for Z17 - to help him be organised, to help him remember things, to help him stay calm and unstressed, to help his self esteem - so when it's time to let go of that it feels very strange.
But boy I'm so proud of what he's been able to achieve...so very proud...

Gotta go....starting to tear up :)

Informed

A trip to our GP to get some forms and things filled out, and a discussion on 'what next' led to this article........

Selective Eating Disorder (SED)
(also known as picky or fussy eating, or perseverative feeding disorder) is an eating disorder that prevents the consumption of certain foods. It is often viewed as a phase of childhood that is generally overcome with age. Children may not grow out of being a picky eater, however, and may continue to be afflicted with SED throughout their adult lives.

The British Journal of Clinical Child Psychology and Psychiatry states that:

Selective eating is the little studied phenomenon of eating a highly limited range of foods, associated with an unwillingness to try new foods. Common in toddlers, it can persist into middle childhood and adolescence in a small number of children, most commonly boys. When this happens social avoidance, anxiety and conflict can result.

Symptoms

Sufferers of SED have an inability to eat certain foods based on texture or aroma. "Safe" foods may be limited to certain food types and even specific brands. In some cases, afflicted individuals will exclude whole food groups, such as fruits or vegetables.

The University College London's Institute of Child Health (UK) relates that:

Typically a child or adolescent with selective eating will be within the normal range for both weight and height, and show no abnormality on physical examination. Sometimes selective eating can come on after a period of normal eating, but for many there may be a history of early feeding difficulties or problem with weaning. Eating a highly restricted range of foods is a common feature of toddlers – up to 20 per cent of children below the age of five years are faddy and the problem persists to the age of eight years in about a third of these. However for some young people the problem persists into middle childhood, adolescence and even adulthood.

SED is common in young people with autistic spectrum disorders.

This disorder should not be confused with "Food Avoidance Emotional Disorder" (a childhood avoidance of food brought about by emotional difficulties and not related to body image) or anorexia nervosa (a disorder characterized by a fear of food due to issues related to body weight).

SED shares similar characteristics with "Food Neophobia", an avoidance of the consumption of novel foods

Causes, treatment and research

Dr. Bradley C. Riemann, the clinical director of obsessive compulsive disorders at Rogers Memorial Hospital in Milwaukee, says: "For the most part it's not trauma or memories that are the problem. It's more about taste, texture, smell and sight.

It can stem from an incident. Say you've gagged on meat before, you may develop a fear of choking and become scared of eating anything chewy. It has also been linked to OCD and a fear of dirt and contamination over how the food has been prepared."

SED can be caused by an extra sensitive taste sensation.

~*******~*******~*******~*******~*******~

I know I have posted a similar article on food neophobia - and both issues affect both of my boys to some degree - although Small Man suffers the worst.

So we have selected a therapy centre, and we are looking into a 'Steps' program - exercise - for people that have chronic illness.

I sought help for the eating issues before, and it was sort of dismissed as an oversensitive pallet and overactive gag reflex....a few visits to physio and that was pretty much it.

If only I'd known more back then I may have been able to sort this out for him earlier....maybe.

My GP is so lovely, I'm so pleased I had the appointment today.

He told me to stop beating myself up, that I'm doing more than most people could or would in this situation, and reminded me that I can only fit in so much in a day.

He also reminded me it will be 3 years in March since Small Man first got the glandular fever that led us to here. :(

Everything happens for a reason - the reason may not be obvious right now, but for now I am just going with it.....fighting it just wears me out.

Also I have had a few genuine offers to help with work, should I get stuck.

Mind you the work phone hasn't stopped today - I have simply ignored it - leave a message people!!!

I am overwhelmed by the kindness and support I have received here over the last few weeks (year actually!), and then last night and today with work.

I'm so used to doing everything myself it's a strange feeling.

But good :)

At least we are now getting somewhere with Small Man, plans wise at least.

It's a different strategy to what I thought we'd be taking......but either way...the result is what matters....a happy healthy boy......

<-> STRESSED <->

What a hell of a day, ordinarily I could handle it but today, not so much.

New boss ran an ad for us with my phone number.

She is so good for doing these for us, and paying for our advertising.....just not with my number.....not at the moment.

I have been inundated with calls - around 30 at least - it got so bad I have had to put the message bank on to take the calls.
So then when they get the message bank they keep ringing back, over and over and over - one rang 5 times in a row.

Umm...leave a freaking message.

I had one of my ladies tell me she may be finishing up as she has another job - so one big vacancy to fill - not so bad.
To be honest she was one that I felt I clicked with the least.
She did well, really well but always put this job last, behind everything else and had a lot of time off, but managed to keep up with the other part time jobs she has.
That's fine but the new job won't grant her time off when things get busy at home.

Then this afternoon when I realised my teams sales aren't enough to get our order shipped this week (the one that is leaving hasn't ordered, another missed a week due to genuine illness, another is away) I had one of my managers call - he needed to speak to me.
So long story short he is most likely finishing up - soon.
That means the re-allocation of his team.
Finding a replacement.
Or me taking the lot on myself.
That just wouldn't be practical with the way I feel at the moment.
One of his areas is 50 - 60km in one direction - and one of the areas I currently manage myself is 45km in the opposite direction.

So a whole bucket of stress - naturally I can sort it out, I expect these things, they happen from time to time - just right at this moment it's a weight I don't really need.

Oh and speaking of weight - I suppose DOCS will be on my doorstep to take me away or whatever - unfit parent it seems as Small Man has a weight problem.
Did you see this is in the news?

*sigh*

Absent

I haven't been around here much in the last few days.

It's all fine - just don't want to be posting the same old trivial stuff, and don't have a lot of energy to put into comments just now - although I've tried to get around a few.

I'm clumsy and awkward and keep spelling my words all around the wrong way - grrr!
Yesterday I hurt my leg getting out of the car, then my arm coming out of the shop.....hopeless!!
Not badly just a minor cut on the leg and a knock to the arm - annoying though.

I'm staying off Facebook for a bit - just can't get into it at the moment.

The heat is affecting everyone, my new boss lives in the middle of the area where the bushfires have been in the last few days - a worrying time for sure.
She is o.k. - they were lucky.

Thank you everyone for your comments on my last post - I haven't caught up with my friend just yet - but I will for sure.
Another ten year coincidence - the last time we were in really regular contact would have been ten years ago.
We were back in touch a few years ago when her father died, and ran into each other some time after that (she didn't recognise me!!!!!!).

Lots happening this week - Z17 has his licence test Friday - so two lessons with the driving instructor one Tuesday and one Friday before his test to prepare him, some appointments to go to, work...the usual.
